What Are Burrowing Owls?
Burrowing owls are small, charismatic owls native to Arizona’s dry, open areas, including grasslands, rangelands, agricultural lands, deserts, and scrublands. Standing less than 12 inches tall, these owls have long legs, a short tail, brown feathers adorned with white or tan spots, and distinctive white eyebrows above bright yellow eyes. Unlike their Florida counterparts, Western Burrowing Owls, like those found in Arizona, typically use abandoned burrows created by mammals such as ground squirrels, prairie dogs, badgers, coyotes, and foxes.
